Hi, fellow dog lovers. My name is Marion Weiner. I'm a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner, a Certified Pet Dog Trainer, a trainer/mentor for Animal Behavior College, a Canine Good Citizenship Evaluator, I do in-home, private consultations in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens.

I've been a dog trainer for the past 12 years. I'm a committed positive reinforcement/clicker trainer. I work with dogs on everything from basic manners to fear and aggression.

My goal for you and your dog is that you have a loving, trusting relationship. Since the human part of the relationship has the superior brain power (usually) , its up to the human to create the relationship. My job is to show you how.

Here's what I think are the ingredients of a great relationship:

• Human provides pooch with the best possible food, adequate exercise and mental stimulation, and positive exposure to as many new things in his environment as possible.
• Human learns humane, dog-friendly training techniques and, at least, trains the basics: sit, down, stay, come, leave it, drop it, walk nicely on a leash, housetraining.Human learns how to prevent or eliminate or effectively manage aggression around food and objects, other dogs, people and children.
• Humans learns how to prevent or eliminate or effectively manage problems with separation anxiety.
• Humans teach their dogs polite behavior.Humans realize that dogs don't speak English and are living in a world with different rules than the rules with which they are programmed. It's the human's job to figure out how to get the dog to do what the human wants.

Most of us have grown up with dogs, and training them didn't seem quite so difficult. I think that the reason having a dog in the city can be so tough is because we are asking them to live in a completely unnatural way.

• Dogs are social creatures, and yet we ask them to stay alone for many, many hours.
• Many of our dogs are designed for specific purposes like hunting, herding or guarding, yet when those instincts kick in, we try our best to stop the behaviors.
• Dogs need way more exercise and mental stimulation that a walk around the block provides.
• Dogs are not designed to be restricted by a leash. Their natural urge is to smell and investigate, and have the option to run away if something scares them or makes them uncomfortable. I think this is the reason so many people have problems with their dogs on a leash.
• Dogs used to get a variety of different foods when they were scavengers or eating family leftovers. Now, many dogs eat the same overly-processed foods over and over again. Many of the foods rely too heavily on grains and carbs for filler. Dogs are primarily carnivores, and the primary ingredient should be a protein source (not corn).
• Most dogs need training to be able to function in the city, yet people expect them to adjust quickly and easily to an alien life style.
